Kim
Beil received her B.A. in Comparative Literature from Brown
University where she concentrated on the translation
of contemporary works of fiction in French and Swedish. As a participant
in Brown's Royce
Fellowship program, Beil worked for two years on a photo essay that explored
her friendship with Artie Akbar Artwell, an inner-city boxing coach
and mentor.
Upon
graduation Beil continued her practice of photography at the Brooks
Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California
while working in the curatorial department of photography
at the Santa
Barbara Museum of Art.
Beil
is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Visual
Studies at the University
of California, Irvine. Her
research interests include photography, visual conventions, perception, temporality, and museums. She is also a
freelance
writer and curator with articles and reviews appearing regularly
in Photographer's Forum and art ltd.
